OXFORD, Miss. -- As the winter season approaches, the 17th annual Adopt-A-Basket program has begun accepting food donations on the first floor of the Gertrude C. Ford Ole Miss Student Union, inside the Fraternity and Sorority Life office through November 19th. Collection times are from noon to 4 P.M..


“We’re seeking to provide baskets for as many in the LOU community that need one,” says senior early education major and program coordinator, Devika Ganapathy.


Anyone interested in participating is encouraged to sponsor an entire basket rather than individual items. The list of accepted items for a basket includes:


  • 2 cans of corn
  • 2 cans of green beans
  • 2 onions
  • 1 can of sweetened condensed milk or coconut milk (low-fat or regular)
  • 1 can of chicken or veg. broth
  • A bag of marshmallows
  • 1-lb to 2 ounce container of ground cinnamon
  • 1lb bag of brown sugar
  • 1-ounce bottle of vanilla extract
  • 5lbs of sweet potatoes
  • 5lbs bag of cornmeal 
  • 1 container of rolled oats
  • 1 bag of almond flour 
  • 1lb bag of lentils (any kind)
  • $25 Walmart, Cashaver, or Kroger gift card for perishable items



The event has provided meals for hundreds of families over the last few years, meeting dietary and cultural needs.
